Congress leaves unemployed Americans in the cold
Hundreds of thousands of Americans will see their federal unemployment benefits expire this week, and millions more by the end of the year, just in time for the holiday season. Economist Max Fraad Wolff says there is a lot of room to cut the deficit instead of these benefits, starting with military which spends more than half the world's defense budget.

2 Million Americans to lose Unemployment Benefits by Christmas
Nearly 2 million people will lose their unemployment benefits by Christmas. That's the Labor Department's estimate, if Congress does not approve to extend benefits beyond 99 weeks. This creates an immediate crisis for millions who are already struggling to stay afloat. According to MSNBC.com, Democrats' efforts to extend benefits for another year were blocked by Republican Senator Scott Brown late Tuesday night, just hours before they were set to expire. The two parties could not reach an agreement on how to pay for the extension. Currently, the unemployment rate continues to hover at just under 10% and nearly half of the 15 million unemployed people in the United States have been out of work for more than six months, the highest level of long-term unemployment since the government began keeping track in the 1940s. And even as the economy grows, the jobs that were lost in the Great Recession aren't being replaced. Benefits are already running out on Wednesday for those who have exhausted their 99 weeks of assistance.
