Poverty and Politics: How Strong Is Safety Net for Poor Americans? Why Are 46 Million Americans Living in Poverty? The latest Census measurement of U.S. poverty out Tuesday found that 46 million Americans live in poverty. About 16 percent of the population live at or below the poverty line. Presidential candidates have loaded recent stump speeches with references to wealth, taxes and "the very poor." Romney says the poor have safety nets. Oh really? Has he tried being poor lately? The man is seriously out of touch with 99% of Americans. Obama is going to trounce him in November..It Shocks me to no end thinking why even when someone like Ron Paul is in the race...Americans keep voting for these men..either some Americans are easily whitewashed by such politicians or they just don't care about their country anymore. How the hell does the middle class and the poor continure to vote for this party? is it mental illness? America is not a Democracy. It is a Plutocracy. To amend and paraphrase Lincoln's gettysburg Address. It should read: "Government of the wealthy, by the wealthy, for the wealthy." It is the most Christian country of all the Western Democracies by numbers of Believers. It is the least Christian country of all the Western Democracies by is actions.
